Jack Dorsey, the founder of Twitter and Block, has released a whitepaper outlining Bitchat, a novel messaging protocol that facilitates secure, encrypted communication without relying on internet connectivity. The protocol leverages Bluetooth Low Energy to create a mesh network, enabling devices to relay messages to each other in a hop-by-hop manner.
This approach ensures the resilience of the network, even in environments with limited or no internet access. To guarantee the confidentiality of messages, Bitchat employs end-to-end encryption using Curve25519 and AES-GCM, while also protecting user identities and minimizing metadata collection. By design, messages are automatically deleted after delivery, unless the user chooses to save them. Dorsey's vision for Bitchat draws parallels with the decentralized nature of Bitcoin, highlighting the potential for a peer-to-peer messaging application to transform the way we communicate digitally.
