In a significant development, Status, a pioneering decentralized communication platform, has unveiled a revolutionary feature that positions its network as the first natively gasless layer 2 on Consensys' Linea zkEVM stack. This innovation, known as the Status Network, is set to operate distinctly from conventional rollups, which typically depend on sequencer fees to maintain their operations.
By launching its testnet, Status Network has successfully eliminated transaction costs, instead adopting a model that rewards liquidity providers and funds builders through yield generated from bridged assets and native application fees. As stated by Cyprien Grau, lead at Status Network, 'Our design ensures that developers can create seamless gaming experiences, social interactions, and DeFi protocols without the need for users to preload gas or for builders to manage paymaster contracts.' By redirecting yield-bearing TVL and sharing net yield with the community, the platform aligns incentives for all stakeholders, providing builders with funding, liquidity providers with sustainable returns, and users with a genuinely free-to-play blockchain experience. The Status approach involves converting bridged ETH and stablecoins into yield-bearing equivalents, thereby channeling income to support the ecosystem and bypassing sequencer fees altogether. This strategy is expected to create a self-sustaining loop, attracting users with a gasless UX, which in turn drives deposits, activity, and growth in native yield and community incentives.
As highlighted in the press release, 'With fees replaced by native yield, users can engage with applications without needing to bridge tokens or replenish gas, resulting in a seamless experience.' The mainnet for Status Network is slated for launch in the first quarter of 2026.
