The United States Senate has confirmed Jonathan Gould, a seasoned executive with experience in blockchain technology, to lead the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency. This move is seen as a significant development in the Trump administration's efforts to ease regulatory hurdles for the cryptocurrency sector. Gould, who previously served as a senior official at the OCC and later as chief legal officer for Bitfury, will oversee national banks and shape the agency's approach to digital assets. During his previous tenure at the OCC, Gould worked under Acting Comptroller of the Currency Brian Brooks, who sought to increase access to banking services for digital asset businesses.
Following Brooks' departure, the OCC adopted a more cautious stance on cryptocurrency under the Biden administration, issuing restrictive guidance to banks engaging in digital asset transactions. However, with the Trump administration's renewed focus on cryptocurrency, the OCC's approach is expected to shift. Gould's confirmation hearing in April did not delve deeply into his plans for cryptocurrency policy, but he expressed his commitment to addressing the issue of 'debanking' faced by industry professionals.
