On Tuesday, the UK government announced plans to facilitate the identification of optimal distributed ledger technology (DLT) applications and implement tokenization solutions within the wholesale market. The government aims to integrate DLT, the technology underlying cryptocurrency, across various sectors of the wholesale financial markets and establish cross-market groups to drive live projects forward, as stated in a policy document released by the Treasury.
Part of this initiative involves developing a regulatory framework for cryptocurrency technology, a process already in progress as the country strives to become a hub for cryptocurrency. In April, the UK published draft legislation for stablecoin issuers and exchanges.
According to the Treasury, 'the government and regulatory bodies are open to innovative proposals for digital wholesale payments, including tokenized deposits and stablecoins.' The government seeks to enable the sector to test tokenization solutions for financial assets and digitize post-trade processes. Globally, the tokenization of real-world assets (RWA) has experienced a 380% growth over the past three years, reaching $24 billion this month, as reported in a first-half 2025 report by RedStone, Gauntlet, and RWA.xyz. Furthermore, UK regulatory bodies will explore the use of stablecoins, digital tokens pegged to assets, alongside other payment solutions within the new digital securities sandbox.
