In a bid to boost the discoverability and interoperability of tokens across various platforms, RippleX developers have put forth a draft standard for structuring metadata on the XRP Ledger. The proposed standard, known as XLS-0089d, aims to establish a minimalist schema for the 1024-byte metadata field attached to each multipurpose token, thereby facilitating easy access to essential information such as token name, ticker symbol, issuer, category, and icon.
Additionally, the standard supports deeper off-ledger details through external uniform resource identifiers. By striking a balance between flexibility and machine readability, the goal is to avoid rigid schemas while defining a baseline set of fields that enable reliable parsing and integration across services like wallets, indexers, block explorers, and cross-chain applications. According to the proposal, the primary objective is to define a common set of fields that support reliable parsing and integration, without restricting expressiveness. The base schema comprises required fields, while optional fields provide additional context, including structured data for real-world assets.
The proposed standard is notable for its asset class and asset subclass taxonomy, which enables token issuers to specify subclasses like stablecoins, private credit, real estate, equity, and treasury. This helps indexers differentiate between various asset-backed instruments. The XLS-0089d proposal is both backward-compatible and opt-in, allowing token issuers to choose whether to adopt it. Tokens that do not adopt the standard will continue to function normally on the XRP Ledger.
However, those that adopt the standard are expected to gain improved visibility and interoperability across XRPL-based tools and services. While adoption remains voluntary, tokens that follow the proposed schema are likely to be more easily indexed and integrated, particularly in future tooling across cross-chain bridges, on-chain analytics platforms, and institutional-grade wallets.
