In a collaborative effort, the state of Wyoming partnered with Hashfire, a blockchain startup, to explore the potential of its forthcoming US dollar stablecoin, known as the Wyoming Stable Token (WYST), in facilitating real-time payments for government contractors. The trial, which was conducted on Thursday, aimed to demonstrate the feasibility of automated vendor agreement approval and instantaneous, on-chain payments using WYST through Hashfire's Document Authentication Protocol, thereby circumventing the typical 45-day payment processing time. This protocol, built on a customized Avalanche blockchain utilizing AvaCloud's infrastructure, enables governments and enterprises to embed approval processes, compliance rules, and payment instructions directly into smart contracts.
Plans are underway for a broader implementation of blockchain-based payment systems using WYST later this quarter. The trial coincides with Wyoming's preparations to launch its US dollar-backed token, pending the introduction of US stablecoin regulations.
The Wyoming Stable Token Commission, established in 2023, is tasked with developing, issuing, and integrating WYST into public finance. Although still in the testing phase, the token is slated for launch as early as July, according to the commission's earlier statements.
