In a significant development, Linea, an Ethereum layer-2 network incubated by Consensys, has announced a comprehensive upgrade designed to further integrate the network into the economic and ideological framework of layer 1. The updated roadmap, set to roll out in October 2025, introduces several key features, including ETH-native staking on bridged assets, a protocol-level ETH burn mechanism, and the allocation of 85% of its token supply to support ecosystem development. This strategic move comes at a time when the Ethereum ecosystem is gaining momentum, driven by growing institutional interest.
According to the Linea team, these updates will position Ethereum to meet the evolving needs of sophisticated capital as traditional finance begins to adopt decentralized finance, while reinforcing Linea's position as a hub for future innovations in on-chain capital markets, staking, and infrastructure. A key aspect of the update is that Linea will become the first layer-2 network to burn ETH at the protocol level, with 20% of net transaction fees committed to reducing Ethereum's supply. The remaining 80% of fees will be utilized to burn LINEA tokens, which have a capped supply, thereby embedding deflationary pressure directly into network activity. Declan Fox, Head of Linea, emphasized that Linea Mainnet will burn ETH with every transaction, utilize the LINEA token to support users, builders, and public goods, and return value to Ethereum's base layer, all while fostering long-term value in the LINEA token-based economy.
Although the LINEA token is not yet live, it is expected to launch soon. The network, which debuted in 2023, currently has $159 million locked in the protocol, according to DefiLlama. The introduction of Linea's ETH staking mechanism will enable bridged ETH to generate staking rewards on Ethereum mainnet, adding a native yield component for liquidity providers and DeFi protocols building on the rollup. The formation of the Linea Consortium, a governing body for the protocol's ecosystem fund, will oversee the allocation of funds, with members including Eigen Labs, ENS Labs, SharpLink, Status, and Consensys.
With a significant portion of the token supply dedicated to long-term growth initiatives, the consortium will focus on supporting developers, liquidity providers, and public goods across the Ethereum ecosystem. Joseph Lubin, CEO of Consensys and co-founder of the Ethereum network, noted that the world is witnessing a significant architectural reset in global finance, where decentralized, programmable infrastructure is becoming essential for value, identity, and coordination across borders and institutions.
Lubin emphasized that Ethereum is emerging as the trust foundation for this new economic architecture, and Linea, with its total Ethereum compatibility, is poised to play a crucial role in this landscape.
