According to a report from News1, the central bank of South Korea is set to launch a specialized unit dedicated to virtual assets, as part of its broader strategy to address the cryptocurrency industry. This unit will be tasked with monitoring the digital asset market and facilitating discussions on legislation tailored to the crypto space, including the country's approach to stablecoins pegged to the Korean won.
This development comes under the leadership of President Lee Jae-myung, who has expressed support for a stablecoin market based on the Korean won to prevent capital outflow. The existing Virtual Asset User Protection Act, enacted in 2023, defines digital assets and outlines penalties for unfair transactions, but the new unit signals a more proactive approach by the Bank of Korea to the evolving cryptocurrency landscape.
