In a significant policy shift, the UK's Financial Conduct Authority will permit individual investors to purchase cryptocurrency exchange-traded notes from October 8, provided they are listed on authorized UK exchanges. This decision reverses a 2021 ban, introduced due to concerns over investor safeguards. The regulator's change of heart reflects the growing maturity of the crypto market and increased understanding of related investment products.

To ensure transparency and fairness, these products must adhere to strict financial promotion guidelines and the FCA's Consumer Duty principles, which prioritize consumer protection. However, investors should be aware that these products will not be covered by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme. This development follows the launch of cryptocurrency exchange-traded funds in the US, which have attracted substantial investment, with total net assets reaching $146.4 billion.
