The concept of perpetual futures has become a cornerstone of crypto finance, but DRW CEO Don Wilson asserts that common perceptions about them are misguided. In a series of posts, Wilson clarified that perpetual futures, or 'perps,' are essentially futures contracts without an expiration date.

Characteristics such as high leverage, auto-deleveraging, and continuous trading are not inherent to the contracts themselves but rather a result of how some crypto exchanges have chosen to implement them. Wilson emphasized that most misconceptions about 'perps' stem from these implementation choices, not the contracts themselves. As interest grows in introducing perpetual futures into regulated US markets, Wilson's comments are particularly relevant.

Several exchanges are exploring the launch of perpetual futures beyond crypto, but regulatory frameworks and whether these products fit within existing futures or swaps frameworks remain uncertain. Unlike traditional futures markets, crypto exchanges operate continuously, utilize digital collateral, and calculate margin requirements in real-time, allowing for higher leverage and alternative liquidation mechanisms. Wilson argues that these technological advancements should not be confused with the fundamental nature of perpetual futures. Instead, he believes that digital payment systems can enhance risk management by enabling real-time settlement and continuous margin recalculation, thereby reducing the need for large initial margin buffers.

Wilson also highlighted the innovation of perpetual futures in eliminating the need for frequent contract rollovers, which reduces transaction costs and market impact. He urged regulators to focus on the economic substance of perpetual futures rather than their legal classification, stating that they should be treated as futures, not swaps, due to their economic nature. Ultimately, Wilson advocates for the broader availability of perpetual futures across various markets, including commodities, securities, and crypto, viewing them as a valuable tool for price discovery and risk management.
