The Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN), a division of the U.S. Treasury, has released an advisory warning financial institutions to be vigilant for suspicious transactions related to cryptocurrency vending machines. These machines, which enable users to purchase and transact in cryptocurrency, provide a convenient means for consumers to acquire digital assets.

However, FinCEN warns that they are being exploited by criminals to facilitate fraudulent activities, cybercrimes, and drug trafficking. The agency highlights a growing number of scams involving payments made through these machines, including fake technical support, impersonation of customer service representatives, and banking scams, which often target older adults.

According to FinCEN Director Andrea Gacki, "Criminals are continually devising methods to exploit innovative technologies, such as cryptocurrency vending machines, to steal funds from victims." The advisory emphasizes that the risks associated with these machines are exacerbated when institutions fail to comply with their obligations under the Bank Secrecy Act. FinCEN has been monitoring illicit activities involving cryptocurrency for several years and has previously reported on the use of bitcoin in human smuggling and exploitation.

The agency has also analyzed cryptocurrency transactions potentially linked to Hamas.
