The U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission has announced plans to permit the trading of spot cryptocurrency contracts on registered exchanges, and is calling on stakeholders to provide input as it moves to implement regulatory clarity.
In a statement, Acting Chairman Caroline Pham invited stakeholders to collaborate with the agency to provide clear guidelines on listing spot cryptocurrency asset contracts on a designated contract market. The initiative, dubbed the 'listed spot crypto trading initiative,' marks the first step in response to a recent report on digital asset markets, which outlined expectations for U.S.
regulators to enable the trading of digital assets by providing market clarity. The move is part of a broader effort to modernize securities rules and facilitate the integration of financial markets with blockchain technology. Stakeholders have been encouraged to submit suggestions by August 18, as Congress works to define the roles of the CFTC and SEC in overseeing the cryptocurrency market.
