In a significant move, US President Donald Trump has issued an executive order permitting the inclusion of cryptocurrency investments in 401(k) retirement plans, paving the way for substantial capital inflows into the asset class. This order also allows for investments in private equity, which is expected to considerably broaden the range of investment options available to retirement plan providers. As a result, cryptocurrency prices may experience a boost, and digital assets may become more integrated with the traditional financial system.
According to a fact sheet released on Thursday, alternative assets such as private equity, real estate, and digital assets offer attractive returns and diversification benefits. Although it was not explicitly prohibited to include cryptocurrencies in retirement plans, the Department of Labor had previously advised fiduciaries to exercise extreme caution when considering the addition of cryptocurrency options to a 401(k) plan's investment menu.
This guidance was rescinded in May, and Trump's order now directs the Department of Labor to publish new guidance that would treat cryptocurrencies similarly to other assets. This development may encourage wealth managers, who had previously been hesitant to invest in the risky asset class, to reconsider their stance, potentially directing millions of dollars into exchange-traded funds (ETFs) holding bitcoin and other assets, or into the cryptocurrencies themselves. The order does not force the inclusion of cryptocurrencies in 401(k) plans but rather allows individuals to make their own investment decisions. The move comes at a time when crypto assets have completed one of their strongest quarters to date, with many reaching new all-time highs in June amidst promising regulatory developments in the US.
Bitcoin, currently trading at $117,351 and up 26% year-to-date, has also seen its volatility decrease to levels not seen since 2023, indicating a maturing market and increased investor confidence. While both spot cryptocurrencies and financial vehicles holding these assets can be added to retirement plans, many managers may opt for ETFs instead of direct exposure due to the risk-averse nature of such investments. The spot bitcoin ETFs have experienced unprecedented success since their launch in January 2024, with BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust alone handling over $85 billion worth of bitcoin.
Additionally, Trump signed an executive order addressing debanking, which aims to prevent financial institutions from denying or restricting services based on political beliefs, religious beliefs, or lawful business activities, ensuring fair access to banking for all Americans.
