Digital asset exchange OKX has appointed Marcus Hughes as its vice president and global head of government relations. Hughes boasts over 20 years of experience in growing regulated businesses, with a background that includes serving as global head of regulatory strategy at Kraken and managing director for Europe and international general counsel at Coinbase. Additionally, he holds a position as venture partner with the U.S. venture capital fund Sentinel Global.
As the global landscape of cryptocurrency and blockchain-based assets continues to evolve, major industry players must navigate an increasingly complex regulatory environment. In the past year, over 50 jurisdictions have introduced or proposed new cryptocurrency regulations, including comprehensive frameworks such as Europe's Markets in Crypto Assets (MiCA) and more fragmented approaches in Asia and the Americas. The U.S. remains a key focus for major exchanges, particularly given the pro-crypto stance of the current administration, which necessitates engagement with policymakers in Washington D.C.
and state-level regulators like the New York Department of Financial Services (NYDFS). Hughes emphasized the importance of balanced regulation in unlocking the full potential of digital assets, expressing his commitment to collaborating with global legislators and policymakers to foster trust and innovation. He praised OKX's culture of prioritizing compliance and its global vision, citing these as key factors in his decision to join the platform.
