In a bid to revolutionize transaction processing across its OP Stack ecosystem, Optimism has joined forces with Flashbots, aiming to significantly enhance the speed and customizability of some of Ethereum's most prominent layer-2 networks. The partnership zeroes in on sequencing, a behind-the-scenes mechanism that dictates how quickly transactions are confirmed, which trades receive priority, and the ultimate cost to users.
By leveraging Flashbots' infrastructure, which is responsible for constructing over 90% of Ethereum's blocks, Optimism seeks to introduce near-instant confirmations and user-friendly transaction ordering to every chain within the Superchain. This development is particularly significant given that the OP Stack underpins more than 60% of all Ethereum layer-2 activity, encompassing notable layer-2 chains such as Base, Unichain, World Chain, Ink, and Soneium. Prior to this partnership, advanced sequencing features like ultra-fast settlement, frontrunning protection, and custom compliance rules were exclusive to the largest chains with the resources to develop them in-house. With Flashbots on board, these features will be accessible to any project building on Optimism's OP stack via specialized tools.
Flashbots is renowned for its work on maximal extractable value (MEV), where its MEV-Boost tool has transformed the block production process. Some of Flashbots' sequencing technologies are already operational on OP Stack chains, with Base and Unichain utilizing 'Flashblocks' to achieve block times as low as 200 milliseconds, while Unichain and World Chain are experimenting with verifiable transaction ordering and priority blockspace to ensure fair transaction ordering and prevent frontrunning. In the forthcoming months, Optimism and Flashbots plan to expand the flashblocks and advanced sequencing research and development to Optimism's mainnet and other chains utilizing the OP Stack.
According to Sam McIngvale, head of product at OP Labs, 'With Flashbots as a core technology partner, we're accelerating the roadmap for fast, cheap, and customizable sequencing across the OP Stack. This is part of our broader mission: empowering builders to design their chains as they see fit, with infrastructure that is open, flexible, and battle-tested in production.'
