The Winklevoss twins-backed cryptocurrency exchange, Gemini, has successfully acquired a Markets in Crypto Assets (MiCA) license from Malta's Financial Services Authority (MFSA), thereby bolstering its efforts to expand throughout the European Union under the region's newly implemented regulatory framework. This development was announced by the company in a recent blog post. The approval signifies a major advancement in Gemini's European strategy, allowing the firm to extend its suite of trading products and services to clients spanning more than 30 European territories.

The European Union's Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) regulation, which came into effect this year, serves as the EU's inaugural region-wide crypto regulatory framework. It aims to standardize digital asset oversight across member states and provide legal clarity for companies operating within the sector.

Gemini has been methodically establishing its regulatory foundation in the region. Earlier in May, the company secured a Markets in Financial Instruments Directive (MiFID II) license, enabling it to offer derivatives. This was followed by the launch of tokenized stocks in Europe the subsequent month. According to the crypto exchange, the MiCA license highlights its enduring commitment to compliance as it prepares to introduce additional offerings, including derivatives, to both retail and institutional clients in Europe.

Moreover, Gemini is among several cryptocurrency companies contemplating an initial public offering (IPO). Last week, the firm announced that it had appointed Goldman Sachs, Citigroup, Morgan Stanley, and Cantor as lead bookrunners for its planned IPO.
