As the blockchain ecosystem evolves, the importance of efficient infrastructure for nodes has become a strategic necessity. Austin Federa, former Head of Strategy at the Solana Foundation, is pioneering this effort with DoubleZero, a protocol designed to revolutionize blockchain communication and scalability. In an in-depth conversation with CoinDesk, Federa discussed the motivations behind DoubleZero, the challenges it addresses, and its vision for a high-performance networking layer that could underpin the next generation of decentralized systems. DoubleZero was initially unveiled as a blockchain layer intended to outpace the internet, crucial for crypto transactions.

Since then, approximately 12.57% of SOL staked has been operating on the DoubleZero testnet, with the mainnet launch anticipated in September. Federa explained that DoubleZero operates by creating a high-performance fiber mesh network, allowing multiple contributors to share their fiber networks and connect people worldwide. When asked why DoubleZero is supporting Solana first, Federa highlighted Solana's unique position among fast blockchains, with an unparalleled ratio of transactions per second to node count. The real goal, according to Federa, is to enable blockchains to outperform the public internet without sacrificing node count or adding centralization.

DoubleZero has applications beyond Solana and blockchain, but its immediate focus is on addressing the pressing needs of the Solana network. The stake pool on Solana, currently holding about 3 million SOL, was initially intended to subsidize the cost of validators on the testnet but has become a valuable tool for onboarding more users.

Upon the mainnet launch in September, the network is expected to expand from 8 to over 50 fiber links, with many links boasting 10 times the capacity of current connections. Federa envisions a future where sufficient stake on the DoubleZero network will enable Solana protocol designers to significantly increase limits, leveraging the higher capacity and lower latency of DoubleZero compared to the public internet. Addressing concerns about performance inequality among validators, Federa emphasized that the internet itself is a centralizing force, with a small number of companies controlling most connectivity.

DoubleZero aims to provide a censorship-resistant path, ensuring that the internet remains a fallback option. With mainnet imminent, the focus is on rigorous testing and preparation for the token launch, also slated for September.
