Hyperliquid Revolutionizes DeFi with Interoperable Liquidity Solutions
The concept that liquidity attracts liquidity is being put into practice by Hyperliquid, a decentralized exchange that has gained popularity among traders, particularly those interested in perpetual futures or 'perps'. Founded by Harvard alumni Jeff Yan and iliensinc, a pseudonymous developer, Hyperliquid has been live since early 2023 and is now capitalizing on the depth and volume of its order book by introducing the concept of composability. This DeFi concept enables permissionless smart contracts to interlock seamlessly, much like financial building blocks, to create new tokenized products. Hyperliquid's Ethereum-compatible HyperEVM is directly connected to its high-performance HyperCore blockchain, allowing other applications to leverage the platform's shared liquidity rather than fragmenting it. This means that applications such as wallets or even other exchanges can utilize Hyperliquid as a backend to offer perps trading and other services, resulting in deeper liquidity, a broader range of assets, and compounded network effects. As more developers integrate with Hyperliquid, the platform's ecosystem continues to grow. Currently, hundreds of developers, including prominent names like MetaMask, Phantom wallet, and VALR, are utilizing Hyperliquid's 'builder codes', generating approximately $90 million in revenue. Hyperion DeFi CEO Hyunsu Jung praises Hyperliquid, stating that it's more than just a perpetuals exchange - it's a comprehensive financial infrastructure akin to AWS. Jung highlights that the platform provides liquidity and execution, allowing builders to focus on delivering exceptional user experiences while maintaining control over their users and interfaces. The 'builder codes' enable integrators to charge fees based on the notional size of their users' trades without needing to develop or maintain the backend infrastructure. This approach allows integrators to offer their users best-in-class on-chain liquidity and institutional-grade infrastructure while earning fees on every trade. For instance, MetaMask, a popular Ethereum-based wallet with over 100 million users worldwide, has integrated with Hyperliquid's EVM module, providing users with self-custodial access to perps directly from the wallet. This integration enables streamlined fund transfers, allowing users to trade directly with the tokens they already hold. The partnership between MetaMask and Hyperliquid has yielded positive results, with the wallet's product manager, Matthieu Saint Olive, noting that Hyperliquid excels at matching orders. By routing orders directly to the Hyperliquid order book, MetaMask Perps offers exceptional liquidity and execution quality. Moreover, MetaMask is witnessing growth beyond the crypto space, with real-world-asset markets accounting for a significant portion of perp volume. The wallet charges a transparent 0.1% builder fee, with no hidden spreads or execution costs, providing traders with a clear understanding of their expenses. Another notable example is VALR, a large centralized exchange in Africa, which has opted to utilize Hyperliquid's perps order book for its liquidity requirements. Despite initially building its own infrastructure, including risk and liquidation engines, VALR struggled to achieve sufficient volume and liquidity for its perpetual futures. According to VALR's CEO, Farzam Ehsani, the decision to integrate with Hyperliquid was driven by the platform's ability to bring together a vast amount of volume and market participants from around the world. Ehsani acknowledged that Hyperliquid's solution has proven to be a viable option for VALR, allowing the exchange to focus on its core strengths while leveraging Hyperliquid's expertise in liquidity and execution. Looking ahead, the DeFi landscape is poised for significant growth, with opportunities for cross-venue arbitrage emerging as more prominent players enter the perps market. As the ecosystem continues to evolve, Hyperliquid is well-positioned to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of DeFi.
