Bitcoin's Quantum Conundrum: Can the Network Mitigate the Looming Threat?
While not all aspects of Bitcoin are vulnerable to quantum attacks, the ownership of coins is at risk due to the type of mathematics used to secure wallets. Quantum computers can potentially break this math, compromising the security of approximately 6.9 million bitcoins, including those held by the network's pseudonymous creator, Satoshi Nakamoto. The issue stems from the fact that some wallet addresses have publicly exposed keys, making them susceptible to quantum attacks. The recent Taproot upgrade has also expanded the problem by publishing keys for any spent bitcoin. Although some proposals, such as BIP-360 and a detection system from BitMEX Research, aim to address the issue, they lack broad support from core developers. The lack of a centralized authority and a formal governance process makes it challenging for Bitcoin to implement effective solutions, unlike Ethereum, which has a dedicated program for quantum resistance. The coordination problem is further complicated by the need for decisions on issues like freezing old address formats, allowing exposed coins to migrate to new addresses, and handling coins whose owners cannot or will not migrate. As the timeline for quantum computing advancements remains uncertain, the question remains whether Bitcoin can overcome its structural hurdles to mitigate the quantum threat before it's too late.
