New Wallet Offers Solution to Bitcoin's Quantum Vulnerability Without Requiring a Network Fork
The developers of a newly launched wallet claim to have found a method to mitigate the risks associated with quantum computing by implementing a smart contract layer that operates in conjunction with the Bitcoin network, without requiring any modifications to the network itself. The wallet, unveiled by Postquant Labs, is called Quip Network and features a post-quantum bitcoin wallet that runs on the Arch Network, allowing developers to build smart contracts directly anchored to Bitcoin. This approach enables the addition of a post-quantum signature scheme, known as WOTS+, which does not rely on elliptic curve mathematics that could be vulnerable to quantum computers. By utilizing a 'Layer 2' network, developers can introduce new features without altering Bitcoin's base layer. The launch of Quip's wallet comes amidst an ongoing debate within the Bitcoin community regarding the best approach to address quantum risk, with some proposals suggesting a soft fork or hard fork, while others argue that a Layer 2 solution is sufficient. The Quip wallet's approach does not require a soft fork, consensus change, or community vote, and its setup narrows the window for a potential quantum attack to as little as two blocks, approximately 20 minutes.
