US Freezes $344 Million in Tether's USDT, Citing Iranian Regime Ties
In its latest move to disrupt Iranian financial networks, the US Treasury Department has frozen $344 million in cryptocurrency, according to an announcement made on Friday. This action is part of a broader initiative known as 'Economic Fury', aimed at stifling the regime's financial resources. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that the US will pursue and disrupt all financial channels used by Tehran, including those involving cryptocurrency. The freeze of $344 million in USDT was facilitated by the blacklisting of two blockchain addresses on the Tron network by Tether, a stablecoin issuer. A US official revealed that the sanctioned wallets had significant ties to the Iranian regime, including transactions with Iranian exchanges and connections to the Central Bank of Iran. The Iranian government has been increasingly relying on digital assets to circumvent restrictions and conceal cross-border transactions. The US Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) is intensifying its efforts to combat the use of digital assets and traditional front companies by sanctioned entities, including the Iranian regime. The agency is collaborating with blockchain analytics firms and financial institutions to track and disrupt illicit financial flows.
