Israel Introduces its First Regulated Digital Currency: The Shekel Stablecoin

In a groundbreaking move, Israel's Capital Market Authority has given the green light to the country's first regulated stablecoin, pegged to the value of the shekel. Following a rigorous two-year evaluation and pilot process, Tel Aviv-based cryptocurrency exchange Bits of Gold has been authorized to issue the token. The BILS stablecoin was created in collaboration with the Solana network and crypto custodian Fireblocks, with auditing oversight provided by Big Four consultancy firm EY. The stablecoin sector has experienced significant growth over the past 18 months, exceeding $300 billion, driven by the establishment of formal regulatory frameworks in major markets such as the US. However, the dominance of US dollar-pegged tokens has raised concerns in non-US markets about potential losses in financial and digital sovereignty. According to Bits of Gold, the Israeli shekel has emerged as one of the stronger performing fiat currencies among developed markets, supported by a robust technology sector and consistent macroeconomic management. With the shekel having gained over 20% against the dollar in the past year, making it the best-performing currency among countries with an annual GDP exceeding $250 billion, introducing it to the blockchain positions it alongside other leading currencies, including the euro, yen, and Singapore dollar, which are gaining traction in blockchain-based financial systems.
