KuCoin EU Expands Compliance Team to Address Regulatory Concerns

In a move to address concerns from its regulator, the European division of the global cryptocurrency exchange KuCoin has enhanced its compliance and anti-money laundering team. This development comes after the exchange was instructed by Austria's Financial Market Authority (FMA) to halt its European operations due to insufficient staffing in AML and compliance roles. KuCoin EU, which holds a MiCA license from the FMA, has appointed Carmen Kleinhans as its Anti-Money Laundering Officer, alongside expanding its broader AML function. Additionally, the exchange has hired seasoned Austrian compliance experts Stephan Klinger and Bernd Träxler as Deputy Anti-Money Laundering Officers. According to KuCoin EU Managing Director Sabina Liu, the exchange has maintained open and transparent communication with the FMA since the regulatory action in February. As part of its efforts to strengthen its compliance team, KuCoin EU has made several key appointments, significantly expanding its team. The exchange has faced challenges recently, including being barred from the U.S. following a CFTC order and facing regulatory issues in Dubai for operating without the necessary license. Liu did not provide a specific timeline for when the Austrian regulator might allow KuCoin EU to resume its European operations, stating that discussions with the FMA are ongoing.
