Unregulated Hong Kong Stablecoins Emerge Amid Official Absence
Hong Kong's financial regulator has cautioned that fake stablecoins are taking advantage of the upcoming regulatory framework, even before the launch of the first officially approved stablecoin product. The Hong Kong Monetary Authority stated that tokens bearing the ‘HKDAP’ and ‘HSBC’ labels are being traded, but are not associated with any authorized issuer. This comes after the HKMA recently awarded its inaugural stablecoin licenses under the newly effective Stablecoins Ordinance, selecting two applicants from a total of 36. The chosen entities reflect the existing banking system in Hong Kong, where a limited number of commercial banks are authorized to issue currency. The regulator warned the public to be cautious of fraudulent schemes, advising them to only trust official announcements from licensed issuers and to conduct transactions through regulated platforms. Industry insiders anticipate the official launch to coincide with Hong Kong's fintech week in November.
