According to a report by The Guardian, Nigel Farage, leader of Reform UK, received a substantial donation of approximately £5 million, equivalent to around $6.7 million, from billionaire Christopher Harborne before announcing his candidacy for the Clacton seat in 2024. The Conservative Party has referred Farage to the Parliamentary Standards Commissioner, while the Labour Party has also alleged that he has violated House of Commons rules. Farage acknowledged the donation in an interview, stating it was intended to provide for his safety and security. Harborne, who holds a 12% stake in Tether, made the donation in 2024. A spokesperson for Reform UK described the payment as a 'personal, unconditional gift' made before Farage's election and unrelated to his decision to run for office. The Commons code of conduct requires new MPs to disclose benefits received in the 12 months preceding their election. The Conservative Party has requested an examination into whether the funds were used for political activities rather than security. Labour Party chair Anna Turley stated that Farage 'appears to have broken the rules again.' This incident comes amid a larger discussion about crypto donations in UK politics, with Harborne having made a record-breaking donation of £9 million to Reform UK last year. The UK government has since imposed a ban on crypto donations to political parties, citing concerns about foreign money being channeled into UK politics.
