U.S. Senator Paves Way for Clarity Act's Progress, Aiming for May Hearing
The latest development in the legislative journey of the bill to fully integrate the crypto sector into the U.S. financial system has seen Senator Thom Tillis, a key figure in the negotiations, express his intention to push forward with the markup process. This move could pave the way for a Senate Banking Committee hearing in mid-May, a critical step before the bill can be finalized and put to a vote. The Republican lawmaker stated that the work on the Clarity Act has addressed many of the concerns raised by banking lobbyists regarding stablecoin rewards, and he is now encouraging the committee chair to proceed with the markup. A markup hearing would provide lawmakers with the opportunity to propose amendments to the bill's language. If successful, the legislation would then need to be reconciled with the version passed by the House of Representatives last year. However, with a tight Senate schedule and potential hurdles, including a Democrat-driven section on ethics and a push from Senator Chuck Grassley for certain aspects to pass through his committee, the bill's progress is far from guaranteed. Despite these challenges, crypto advocates remain optimistic, with the CEO of the Digital Chamber, Cody Carbone, noting that there is more momentum than ever for a markup in May.
