Senator Warren Challenges Commerce Secretary Lutnick Over Tether's Alleged Loan to His Family

U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, formerly the CEO of Cantor Fitzgerald, which manages Tether's U.S. finances, is facing scrutiny from Senate Democrats over allegations that a trust linked to his children received a loan from Tether to facilitate Lutnick's divestment of his company stake to his children. Senators Elizabeth Warren and Ron Wyden have written to Lutnick and Ardoino, seeking clarification on whether Tether provided financial assistance for this transaction, which occurred as Lutnick complied with government ethics requirements after taking office. The lawmakers expressed concern that such a loan, if true, could raise questions about Lutnick's relationship with Tether and the potential influence on his policy decisions. This development comes after Congress passed legislation governing stablecoin issuers like Tether, with CEO Ardoino attending the White House signing ceremony. The senators emphasized the importance of Lutnick making decisions in the best interest of the American public, rather than his family or Tether. Representatives from the Department of Commerce and Tether have not responded to requests for comment. Lutnick's company, Cantor, is now led by his sons, while Tether continues to expand its U.S. presence with the launch of its USAT stablecoin and a U.S. arm headed by Bo Hines, a former crypto adviser to President Trump.
