Breakthrough in Quantum Attack: Researcher Claims 1 Bitcoin Bounty
The threat of quantum attacks on cryptocurrency has become more tangible, following a recent breakthrough by independent researcher Giancarlo Lelli. Lelli was awarded a 1 bitcoin bounty by quantum security startup Project Eleven for breaking a 15-bit elliptic curve key on publicly accessible quantum hardware. This achievement marks a significant milestone, as it demonstrates the largest public demonstration of a quantum attack on elliptic curve cryptography to date. Elliptic curve cryptography is a crucial component of cryptocurrency, enabling wallets to prove ownership of funds without revealing private keys. However, quantum computers pose a threat to this security measure by using Shor's algorithm to attack the underlying logic. Although Lelli's result does not immediately compromise the security of bitcoin, which uses 256-bit elliptic curve security, it highlights the rapid progress being made in quantum computing. The previous public break was a 6-bit demonstration, and Lelli's 15-bit result represents a 512-fold increase in just seven months. This advancement has significant implications for the cryptocurrency community, particularly for wallets with publicly visible keys, which could be vulnerable to quantum attacks. As a result, developers are exploring migration paths, including the implementation of quantum-safe address types, to mitigate this risk.
