DeFi Leaders Unite to Support Aave Users with Massive Rescue Plan After Recent Crypto Hack
In the typically fragmented world of decentralized finance, crises often expose existing vulnerabilities. However, this time, the response to the recent hack has revealed an unusual level of cooperation and unity among industry leaders. Following significant losses tied to the Kelp DAO exploit, Aave, one of the largest lending protocols in DeFi, has become the focal point of a broad recovery effort. The initiative, dubbed 'DeFi United,' has secured approximately $303 million in commitments as of Monday, with a substantial portion still pending governance approval. The exploit, which had a ripple effect on rsETH markets and created risk across lending positions on Aave, has prompted what is shaping up to be one of the most coordinated industry responses to a DeFi incident. Aave Labs has outlined a plan to allocate up to 250,000 ETH as part of the recovery effort, with founder Stani Kulechov personally donating 5,000 ETH. Other key contributors include Emilio Frangella, Ernesto Boado, and Marcelo Ruiz de Orlano, among others. The response has quickly expanded beyond Aave, with Consensys and its founder Joseph Lubin committing up to 30,000 ETH in financial support. Sharplink played a strategic advisory role in these discussions. The effort has also drawn smaller contributions from across the community, including proposals from Lido, EtherFi, and Mantle. Other participants, such as Babylon Foundation, Renzo, and Circle Ventures, have made significant deposits into Aave. The list of participants continues to grow, with entities like Ethena, LayerZero, and Frax Finance also contributing to the cause. Aave Labs has emphasized that these are long-standing relationships across the ecosystem, with teams like Consensys and Sharplink maintaining close contact throughout. The breadth of participation highlights the widespread impact of the exploit across DeFi, with many industry leaders recognizing the importance of supporting users and restoring normal market conditions.
