Jesse Pollak of Coinbase Foresees AI Agents Revolutionizing Crypto Payments
According to Jesse Pollak of Coinbase, the rapid advancement of AI agents is transforming the online payment landscape, with crypto infrastructure playing a pivotal role. Pollak noted that what was nearly impossible just nine months ago has become feasible due to the rapid evolution of autonomous AI systems, which now require native transaction capabilities. This shift has sparked interest in 'agentic payments,' enabling AI systems to autonomously pay for services such as data access, computing, or travel bookings. Pollak believes that the open-source x402 payments protocol, developed by Coinbase and collaborators including Microsoft, Google, and Mastercard, will be crucial in facilitating on-demand API payments without traditional subscriptions or billing systems. By leveraging blockchain-based payments, agents can make global transactions instantly and nearly for free, Pollak explained. With approximately $48 million in payment volume already flowing through X402, mostly on the Ethereum layer-2 network Base, the ecosystem is expanding rapidly. The long-term goal is to create an open marketplace where agents can access services programmatically without human intervention. While fully autonomous businesses are emerging, Pollak anticipates that the near-term impact will come from individuals using AI to enhance their performance. The key challenge for crypto remains adoption, which Pollak believes can be addressed by making the technology more invisible and seamless.
