KuCoin EU Enhances AML Capabilities to Address Austrian Regulatory Concerns

In a move to address regulatory concerns, the European division of cryptocurrency exchange KuCoin has recruited experts in anti-money laundering and compliance. This development comes after the Austrian Financial Market Authority instructed KuCoin EU to halt its European operations due to a shortage of staff in these critical areas. To rectify this, KuCoin EU, which holds a Markets in Crypto Assets license from Austria's FMA, has appointed Carmen Kleinhans as its Anti-Money Laundering Officer. Additionally, the company has expanded its AML function and hired seasoned Austrian compliance professionals Stephan Klinger and Bernd Träxler as Deputy Anti-Money Laundering Officers. According to KuCoin EU Managing Director Sabina Liu, the exchange has maintained open communication with the FMA since the regulatory action in February. 'We have always had a very transparent and open dialogue with them, and they have been very honest, transparent, and supportive of us,' Liu stated. Since February, KuCoin EU has focused on strengthening its compliance team, making several key appointments. The exchange has faced challenges recently, including being barred from the U.S. following a Commodity Futures Trading Commission order and facing regulatory issues in Dubai for operating without the proper license. Liu could not provide a specific timeline for when the Austrian regulator would permit KuCoin EU to resume European operations, emphasizing that discussions with the FMA are ongoing.
