Crypto Industry Unites to Support Aave Users After Massive Hack, Pledging Hundreds of Millions
The decentralized finance sector is witnessing an unprecedented level of cooperation in response to a recent massive crypto hack. Aave, a prominent lending protocol, is at the forefront of a broad recovery effort, drawing in significant capital and credit commitments from across the industry. Dubbed 'DeFi United,' this initiative has secured approximately $303 million in commitments as of Monday, according to its website, with much of the capital awaiting governance approval. The effort aims to mitigate losses stemming from the Kelp DAO exploit, which has affected rsETH markets and posed risks to lending positions on Aave. Aave Labs, alongside other key players, is driving this coordinated response, with a governance proposal outlining a plan to allocate up to 250,000 ETH for recovery. Founder Stani Kulechov has pledged 5,000 ETH, while other contributors, including Emilio Frangella, Ernesto Boado, and Marcelo Ruiz de Orlano, have also committed significant amounts. The response has extended beyond Aave, with Consensys and its founder Joseph Lubin committing up to 30,000 ETH in financial support. Sharplink has played a strategic advisory role in these discussions. Other notable contributors include Lido, EtherFi, Mantle, and Compound, with proposals to allocate significant amounts to support users and limit bad debt. The initiative has also drawn smaller contributions from the community, with entities such as Babylon Foundation, Renzo, Circle Ventures, Avalanche Foundation, Solana Foundation, and Justin Sun making deposits or purchasing AAVE tokens. The list of participants continues to grow, with Ethena, LayerZero, Frax Finance, and Ink Foundation, among others, also contributing. The breadth of participation highlights the widespread impact of the exploit across DeFi and underscores the importance of cooperation in times of crisis. As the Ethereum ecosystem moves together to support users and restore normal market conditions, the 'DeFi United' initiative serves as a testament to the sector's resilience and determination.
