The Perils of Bitcoin's eCash Airdrop: Developers Sound the Alarm

Paul Sztorc's proposed eCash fork has sparked intense debate, with many developers and industry experts framing it as a hazardous airdrop rather than a traditional hard fork. This perspective shifts the focus from a battle over Bitcoin's principles to concerns about user risk and the potential for uneven distribution. According to Sergio Lerner, co-founder of Rootstock Labs, 'eCash is a new blockchain... It is not directly taking anything away from bitcoin holders.' However, Lerner and others argue that distributing eCash based on Bitcoin's UTXO set exposes users to avoidable operational risk, particularly if they attempt to claim the tokens. The lack of full replay protection between the two chains further compounds this risk, as transactions intended for Bitcoin could inadvertently affect funds on the eCash network, or vice versa. Dan Held, a Bitcoin entrepreneur, bluntly stated: 'Reallocating Satoshi's coins is shock value marketing, and the no-replay protection makes it quite hazardous to redeem.' Beyond security concerns, the distribution itself is being questioned, as Bitcoin ownership is often intermediated by exchanges, custodians, and institutional platforms. This means that the entity controlling private keys may not always be the economic owner of the coins, placing users who hold bitcoin through custodians at a disadvantage. Lerner criticized the project's funding model, which allocates a portion of Satoshi-linked coins on the new chain to early investors, calling it 'morally objectionable and unnecessary.' For others, the objection goes beyond mechanics, with Jay Pollak, head of strategy at Bitcoin sidechain VerifiedX, seeing the proposal as part of a broader category of attempts to reinterpret Bitcoin's core properties through derivative systems. Pollak argues that even indirect changes to how Bitcoin ownership is represented risk undermining the system's core guarantee. The reaction to eCash is clarifying the boundaries of acceptable experimentation in the Bitcoin ecosystem, highlighting the need for careful consideration of the potential risks and consequences of such proposals.
