Israel Introduces Its First Regulated Stablecoin, the Digital Shekel
The Israeli Capital Market Authority has given the green light to the country's first stablecoin, which is pegged to the value of the shekel. Following a thorough two-year evaluation and pilot process, Tel Aviv-based cryptocurrency exchange Bits of Gold has received authorization to issue the token. In collaboration with the Solana network and crypto custodian Fireblocks, with auditing oversight provided by EY, the token, BILS, represents a notable achievement. The stablecoin sector has experienced rapid growth over the past 18 months, exceeding $300 billion, driven by the establishment of formal regulatory frameworks in major markets like the US. However, the dominance of US dollar-pegged tokens has raised concerns about the potential loss of financial and digital sovereignty in non-US markets. According to Bits of Gold, the Israeli shekel has demonstrated resilience, supported by a strong technology sector and effective macroeconomic management, making it an attractive option for a stablecoin. With the shekel gaining over 20% against the dollar in the past year, it has emerged as one of the best-performing currencies among developed markets. By introducing the shekel to the blockchain, it joins other prominent currencies, such as the euro, yen, and Singapore dollar, which are increasingly being used in blockchain-based financial systems.
