KuCoin EU Boosts Compliance Team to Address Austrian Regulatory Concerns
In a move aimed at satisfying the demands of its Austrian regulator, KuCoin EU, the European branch of the global cryptocurrency exchange, has enhanced its anti-money laundering and compliance capabilities. This development comes after the regulator, Austria's Financial Market Authority (FMA), instructed KuCoin to halt its European operations due to a lack of adequate staffing in AML and compliance roles. To address this issue, KuCoin EU has appointed Carmen Kleinhans as its Anti-Money Laundering Officer and expanded its AML function. Additionally, the company has hired seasoned compliance experts Stephan Klinger and Bernd Träxler as Deputy Anti-Money Laundering Officers. According to KuCoin EU Managing Director Sabina Liu, the exchange has maintained open communication with the FMA since the regulator's action in February. Liu emphasized the exchange's commitment to transparency and dialogue with the regulator, stating that they have been supportive and honest throughout the process. Since February, KuCoin EU has been focused on strengthening its compliance team, making several key appointments to enhance its capabilities. The exchange has recently faced challenges, including being barred from the US market by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission and facing regulatory issues in Dubai. However, Liu was unable to provide a specific timeline for when the Austrian regulator would permit KuCoin EU to resume its European operations, citing the need for ongoing discussions with the FMA.
