Israel Introduces Its First Regulated Stablecoin: A Digital Shekel

In a groundbreaking move, Israel's Capital Market Authority has granted approval for the issuance of a stablecoin pegged to the Israeli shekel. This development comes after a two-year evaluation and pilot process, with Tel Aviv-based cryptocurrency exchange Bits of Gold receiving authorization to issue the token. The stablecoin, known as BILS, was created in partnership with the Solana network and crypto custodian Fireblocks, with auditing oversight provided by Big Four consultancy firm EY. The stablecoin sector has experienced significant growth over the past 18 months, with its size surging to over $300 billion. This growth has been fueled by the establishment of formal regulatory regimes in major markets such as the US. However, the dominance of US dollar-pegged tokens has raised concerns in markets outside the US about the potential loss of financial and digital sovereignty. The introduction of the Israeli shekel stablecoin is seen as a way to promote financial and digital sovereignty, with the shekel having emerged as one of the stronger performing fiat currencies among developed markets. Over the past year, the shekel has gained more than 20% against the dollar, making it the best-performing currency among countries with an annual gross domestic product exceeding $250 billion. By bringing the shekel onchain, it will join other leading currencies, including the euro, yen, and Singapore dollar, that are gaining traction in blockchain-based financial systems.
