The developers of a newly launched wallet claim to have devised a method to counter the risks posed by quantum computing to Bitcoin, leveraging a smart contract layer that operates in tandem with the Bitcoin network without requiring any alterations to the network itself. Postquant Labs unveiled its Quip Network wallet on Tuesday, which utilizes Arch Network to enable the construction of smart contracts directly anchored to Bitcoin. This approach facilitates the addition of a post-quantum signature scheme, known as WOTS+, to enhance Bitcoin's security without relying on elliptic curve mathematics that could be vulnerable to quantum computing. By employing a 'Layer 2' network, developers can introduce new features without modifying Bitcoin's core protocol. The launch of this wallet comes amidst an ongoing debate within the Bitcoin community regarding the best approach to addressing quantum risks, with some proposals suggesting a soft fork or hard fork to integrate quantum-resistant measures. However, the Quip wallet's approach eliminates the need for such forks, instead offering immediate protection. The Bitcoin community has been grappling with the issue of quantum readiness, with prominent developer Jameson Lopp proposing a plan to phase out quantum-vulnerable addresses and freeze non-compliant coins. Meanwhile, Paul Sztorc has suggested a hard fork to create a quantum-resistant Bitcoin variant. Both proposals have faced resistance from the community, with some arguing that a more incremental approach, such as the one employed by Quip, may be more effective. The Quip wallet's method has its own set of trade-offs, including the potential for public keys to be exposed when a user broadcasts a transaction, which could provide a target for a future quantum attack. Nevertheless, the wallet's developers argue that their approach narrows the window for such an attack to as little as two blocks, or approximately 20 minutes.
