Time's Running Out for Bitcoin to Counter Quantum Threat, Putting 6.9 Million BTC at Risk

Not all aspects of bitcoin are vulnerable to quantum computers. The process of mining, which involves adding new blocks to the blockchain, utilizes a type of mathematics known as hashing that quantum computers are unable to effectively breach. The blockchain itself and the rule that new bitcoins can only be created through mining would withstand a quantum attack. However, ownership is a different matter. Bitcoin wallets are secured by a distinct type of mathematics that transforms a private key into a public address. This math is simple in one direction but virtually impossible in the other, which is the primary obstacle preventing unauthorized individuals from spending your coins. A quantum algorithm known as Shor's algorithm can bypass this obstacle, and a recent paper by Google demonstrated that such an attack could be executed with fewer resources than previously thought, within a timeframe that competes with bitcoin's block times. This article, the final installment in a series, examines the potential consequences and the response from the bitcoin community. Approximately 6.9 million bitcoins, roughly one-third of all mined coins, are stored in wallets with publicly visible keys, making them susceptible to quantum attacks. This includes early bitcoins and any wallet that has been used for transactions, as spending reveals the key. A quantum attacker wouldn't need to rush; they could methodically target these wallets at their own pace. The 2021 Taproot upgrade inadvertently expanded the problem by making any spent bitcoin publish its key, leaving the remaining balance at risk. While there are discussions and proposals, such as BIP-360 and a detection system from BitMEX Research, there is currently no unified strategy from bitcoin developers to address this issue. The lack of a formal governance process and the network's aversion to centralized authority make coordinating a solution challenging. Ethereum, on the other hand, has been working on quantum resistance since 2018, with a dedicated program and roadmap. The question remains whether bitcoin can overcome its structural hurdles to implement the necessary security upgrades before it's too late.
