Jesse Pollak of Coinbase Foresees AI Agents Revolutionizing Crypto Payments

The emergence of AI agents is transforming online payment systems, with crypto infrastructure poised to play a pivotal role, according to Jesse Pollak of Coinbase. In a recent interview with CoinDesk, Pollak noted that capabilities once deemed impossible just nine months prior are now achievable due to the rapid advancement of autonomous AI systems. As these agents continue to evolve, the need for seamless transaction capabilities has become apparent. This has sparked interest in 'agentic payments,' where AI systems can independently pay for services such as data access, computing power, or travel bookings. Pollak expressed his enthusiasm for x402, an open-source payments protocol developed by Coinbase in collaboration with Microsoft, Google, and Mastercard, which enables on-demand API payments without the need for subscriptions or traditional billing systems. By leveraging blockchain-based payments, agents can execute a single API or smart contract call to transfer funds globally, virtually instantaneously and at negligible cost, Pollak explained. Early adoption is already evident, with approximately $48 million in payment volume having been processed through x402 to date, primarily on Base, the Ethereum layer-2 network founded by Pollak and incubated by Coinbase. The ecosystem is expanding rapidly, with integrations spanning AI providers, data platforms, and travel services that agents can access directly. Pollak's long-term vision involves creating an open marketplace where agents can programmatically access services without encountering paywalls or requiring human intervention. 'The goal is to let agents operate freely,' he said, envisioning a system where software can discover, purchase, and utilize digital services in real-time without hindrance. While fully autonomous 'zero-human' businesses are beginning to emerge, Pollak believes the more significant near-term impact will come from individuals augmenting their capabilities with AI. 'Top performers are now leveraging agents to further enhance their performance,' he described, outlining workflows powered by multiple parallel AI systems. For the crypto industry, the primary challenge remains adoption. Pollak argued that the solution lies not in improved marketing, but rather in making crypto payments invisible and seamless.
