Jesse Pollak of Coinbase Foresees AI Agents Revolutionizing Crypto Transactions
According to Jesse Pollak of Coinbase, the emergence of AI agents is transforming the online payment landscape, with crypto infrastructure poised to play a pivotal role. Pollak notes that what was previously unimaginable is now achievable, thanks to the rapid evolution of autonomous AI systems, which require native transaction capabilities. This has sparked interest in 'agentic payments,' enabling AI systems to autonomously pay for services like data access and travel bookings. Pollak believes the open-source x402 payments protocol, developed in collaboration with industry giants like Microsoft, Google, and Mastercard, will be instrumental in this shift. By leveraging blockchain-based payments, agents can execute transactions globally and virtually instantly, at minimal cost. With approximately $48 million in payment volume already flowing through x402, primarily on the Ethereum layer-2 network Base, the ecosystem is expanding rapidly. The long-term goal is to create an open marketplace where agents can access services programmatically, without human intervention. While fully autonomous businesses are emerging, Pollak predicts that the near-term impact will come from individuals augmenting their capabilities with AI. To drive adoption, Pollak argues that crypto solutions should prioritize invisibility over marketing.
