New Wallet Offers Solution to Mitigate Bitcoin's Quantum Computing Risks Without Requiring a Network Fork
The developers of a newly launched wallet claim to have devised a method to counter the risks associated with quantum computing by utilizing a smart contract layer that operates in conjunction with the Bitcoin network, eliminating the need for any alterations to the network itself. Postquant Labs has introduced the Quip Network wallet, which leverages Arch Network to build smart contracts directly anchored to Bitcoin. This approach enables the addition of a post-quantum signature scheme, known as WOTS+, to enhance the security of Bitcoin transactions. By employing a 'Layer 2' network, developers can introduce new features without modifying the base layer of Bitcoin. The launch of this wallet occurs amidst ongoing discussions within the Bitcoin community regarding the best approach to addressing quantum computing risks, with proposals ranging from phasing out vulnerable addresses to implementing a hard fork. The Quip wallet's methodology offers an alternative solution that does not require a soft fork, consensus change, or community vote, thereby providing a more immediate and less disruptive means of enhancing Bitcoin's security.
