Breakthrough in Quantum Attack: Researcher Claims 1 Bitcoin Bounty
The threat of quantum attacks on cryptocurrency has become more tangible with the recent achievement of independent researcher Giancarlo Lelli. Lelli was awarded a 1 bitcoin bounty by quantum security startup Project Eleven for breaking a 15-bit elliptic curve key on publicly accessible quantum hardware. This breakthrough demonstrates the ability to derive a private encryption key from its public counterpart, a crucial aspect of elliptic curve cryptography. Although the 15-bit key is significantly smaller than the 256-bit keys used in Bitcoin, this achievement marks a substantial increase in the scale of quantum attacks, with a 512-fold improvement over the previous public demonstration. The bounty, worth approximately $78,000, highlights the growing concern over the potential risks posed by quantum computing to cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum. Elliptic curve cryptography, which enables crypto wallets to prove fund ownership without revealing private keys, is susceptible to quantum attacks using Shor's algorithm. While Lelli's achievement does not immediately compromise Bitcoin's security, it underscores the need for ongoing research and development of quantum-resistant cryptographic solutions. Project Eleven's Q-Day Prize aims to encourage innovation in this area, and Lelli's success demonstrates the potential for independent researchers to contribute to this effort. The previous public break, a 6-bit demonstration by Steve Tippeconnic in September 2025, has been eclipsed by Lelli's 15-bit result, which expanded the scale of quantum attacks by a factor of 512 in just seven months. As the cost of quantum computing resources continues to decrease, the barrier to running large-scale quantum attacks is also lowering. Theoretical estimates suggest that the cost of a full 256-bit attack could be below 500,000 physical qubits, down from earlier estimates in the millions. This has significant implications for cryptocurrencies, particularly for wallets with publicly visible addresses, which could be vulnerable to quantum attacks. Approximately 6.9 million bitcoin, or one-third of the total supply, are stored in such addresses, including those belonging to Satoshi Nakamoto. In response to these concerns, Bitcoin developers have proposed migration paths, including the introduction of quantum-safe address types. Other cryptocurrencies, such as Ethereum, Tron, StarkWare, and Ripple, have also published post-quantum transition plans. While the 15-bit key broken by Lelli is still far from the 256-bit keys used in Bitcoin, this achievement serves as a reminder of the rapidly evolving landscape of quantum computing and its potential impact on the cryptocurrency ecosystem.
