Jesse Pollak of Coinbase Predicts AI Agents Will Revolutionize Crypto Payments

According to Jesse Pollak of Coinbase, the emergence of AI agents is poised to significantly impact the way online payments are made, with crypto infrastructure playing a pivotal role. In a recent interview, Pollak noted that what was previously impossible has become a reality due to advancements in autonomous AI systems. As AI agents continue to evolve, the need for seamless transaction capabilities has become increasingly evident. This shift has sparked interest in 'agentic payments,' where AI systems can autonomously pay for services such as data access, computing, or travel bookings. Pollak expressed his hope that the x402 open-source payments protocol, developed by Coinbase and collaborators including Microsoft, Google, and Mastercard, will be a key component of this shift. The protocol enables on-demand API payments without the need for subscriptions or traditional billing systems. By leveraging blockchain-based payments, agents can make global transactions instantly and at a minimal cost. There is already noticeable traction, with approximately $48 million in payment volume having been processed through x402 to date, the majority of which has occurred on Base, the Ethereum layer-2 network founded by Pollak and incubated by Coinbase. The ecosystem is expanding rapidly, with integrations spanning AI providers, data platforms, and travel services that agents can access directly. Pollak's long-term vision is to create an open marketplace where agents can access services programmatically without encountering paywalls or requiring human intervention. While fully autonomous 'zero-human' businesses are beginning to emerge, Pollak believes the more significant near-term shift will come from individuals using AI to augment their capabilities. The broader challenge for crypto remains adoption, with Pollak arguing that the solution lies in making the technology more invisible, rather than relying on improved marketing strategies.
