Canadian Parliament Advances Bill to Prohibit Cryptocurrency Donations in Politics

Canada's proposed ban on cryptocurrency donations for political purposes has moved closer to becoming law, after the bill gained cross-party support and cleared a key vote in Parliament. The proposed legislation, known as Bill C-25, aims to prohibit donations made in cryptocurrency, citing concerns over their potential to be used for illicit activities due to their difficulty in being traced. The ban would apply to all federal parties, electoral district associations, and candidates, as well as third parties involved in election advertising. Recipients of such donations would be required to return them within 30 days or remit them to the Receiver General. The bill's progress comes despite some Conservative lawmakers raising questions about the proposed restrictions, although they ultimately supported the bill's progression to committee.
