DeFi Leaders Unite to Rescue Aave Users After Massive Crypto Hack
The decentralized finance world is witnessing an unusual display of coordination in response to a recent massive crypto hack. Aave, a leading lending protocol, is at the forefront of a broad recovery effort following significant losses tied to the Kelp DAO exploit. This endeavor, dubbed 'DeFi United,' has garnered approximately $303 million in commitments as of Monday, according to its website, with much of the capital pending governance approval. The exploit, which affected rsETH markets and created risk across lending positions on Aave, has prompted a highly coordinated industry response. Aave Labs and numerous other participants are contributing to the recovery, with Aave proposing to allocate up to 250,000 ETH and founder Stani Kulechov donating 5,000 ETH personally. Other contributors include Emilio Frangella, Ernesto Boado, BGD Labs, and Marcelo Ruiz de Orlano, among others. The response extends beyond Aave, with Consensys committing up to 30,000 ETH in financial support and other ecosystem participants like Lido, EtherFi, and Mantle also contributing. The effort has drawn smaller contributions from across the community, including proposals from Compound and deposits into Aave from entities like Babylon Foundation, Renzo, and Circle Ventures. The list of participants continues to grow, with entities like Ethena, LayerZero, Frax Finance, and Ink Foundation also involved. The breadth of participation highlights the widespread impact of the exploit across DeFi and underscores the priority of supporting users and restoring normal market conditions.
