Israel Introduces its First Regulated Stablecoin: A Digital Version of the Shekel

The Israeli Capital Market Authority has given the green light to the country's first regulated stablecoin, pegged to the value of the shekel. After a rigorous two-year evaluation and pilot phase, Tel Aviv-based cryptocurrency exchange Bits of Gold has been authorized to issue the token. The BILS stablecoin is the result of a collaborative effort between Bits of Gold, the Solana network, and prominent crypto custodian Fireblocks, with auditing oversight provided by EY. The stablecoin market has experienced rapid growth over the past 18 months, exceeding $300 billion in value. This surge is largely attributed to the establishment of formal regulatory frameworks in major markets, including the United States. However, the dominance of US dollar-pegged tokens has raised concerns about the potential loss of financial and digital sovereignty in non-US markets. According to Bits of Gold, the Israeli shekel has demonstrated remarkable strength among developed market currencies, driven by a thriving technology sector and prudent macroeconomic management. Over the past year, the shekel has appreciated by over 20% against the US dollar, making it the best-performing currency among countries with a GDP exceeding $250 billion. By introducing the shekel to the blockchain, it joins other leading currencies, such as the euro, yen, and Singapore dollar, which are increasingly being used in blockchain-based financial systems.
