Counterfeit Stablecoins Emerge in Hong Kong Ahead of Licensed Launches
A warning has been issued by Hong Kong's central banking authority regarding the circulation of fake stablecoins, which are masquerading as legitimate under the guise of 'HKDAP' and 'HSBC' labels, even before the official launch of any licensed stablecoin products. According to the Hong Kong Monetary Authority, these tokens are not affiliated with any authorized issuers, including the recently licensed applicants. This development comes after the HKMA granted its inaugural stablecoin licenses, paving the way for the introduction of regulated stablecoins in the market. The public has been cautioned to be aware of potential scams and to only conduct transactions through official channels. Industry insiders anticipate the official launch of licensed stablecoins to coincide with Hong Kong's fintech week in November.
