The price of Bitcoin has retreated to $79,000 after briefly surpassing $80,000 during Asian trading hours. At the time of writing, the cryptocurrency with the largest market capitalization had gained 0.4% over the past 24 hours. The CoinDesk 20 Index also rose by 0.4%, accompanied by a nearly 1% increase in ether and modest gains in XRP and solana. Analysts at Marex emphasize that the current level is more significant than the narrative.

They note that $80,000 serves as a psychological barrier, and a clean break above it could turn the trade into a momentum-driven move with room for further extension. Conversely, a rejection could lead to a fade, keeping the price within the same range and inviting profit-taking towards the mid-$70,000 range. The likelihood of a clean break above $80,000 remains high due to the prevailing risk-on sentiment in global markets and robust market flows. Marex analysts attribute this to the straightforward driver stack, where equities are stronger due to AI and megacap earnings, and crypto is benefiting from the risk-on impulse.

Moreover, institutional demand is clearly present, as evidenced by strong ETF inflows towards the end of last week. The 11 U.S.-listed spot exchange-traded funds attracted over $600 million on Friday, extending the institutional demand that has totaled $3.29 billion over the past two months, according to SoSoValue. QCP Capital's market insights team notes that spot ETF flows remain supportive, with roughly $163 million in net inflows last week, despite some outflows from April 27 to 29 likely due to month-end rebalancing and basis trade adjustments.

However, Friday's inflow of approximately $630 million more than offset those outflows. Despite the supportive backdrop, analysts caution about several key risks that could pose headwinds. Firstly, the risk-on rally may face renewed pressure if tensions between the U.S.

and Iran escalate again, given the lack of breakthrough in peace talks and the sensitivity of energy markets to any disruption in the Strait of Hormuz. U.S.

President Donald Trump has threatened to impose tariffs on countries purchasing Iranian oil, which could further intensify trade tensions. Secondly, persistent security risks in decentralized finance threaten widespread adoption. For the time being, the setup is straightforward: equities are strong, ETF inflows are rising, and bitcoin is benefiting from both trends. It is essential to remain alert to these developments.
