Israel Introduces Its First Regulated Digital Currency: The Shekel Stablecoin

The Israeli Capital Market Authority has given its first-ever approval for a stablecoin tied to the shekel. Following a two-year evaluation and pilot phase, Tel Aviv-based cryptocurrency exchange Bits of Gold has been authorized to issue the token, as announced on LinkedIn. The BILS token was created in collaboration with the Solana network and Fireblocks, a leading crypto custodian, with auditing oversight provided by EY. Over the last 18 months, the stablecoin sector, which includes crypto tokens pegged to traditional assets like fiat currencies, has grown to over $300 billion, driven by the establishment of formal regulatory frameworks in major markets like the US. However, the dominance of US dollar-pegged tokens has raised concerns about potential losses of financial and digital sovereignty in non-US markets. According to Bits of Gold, the Israeli shekel has proven to be one of the stronger performing fiat currencies among developed markets, thanks to its robust technology sector and consistent macroeconomic management. The shekel has appreciated by more than 20% against the US dollar over the past year, making it the best-performing currency among countries with a GDP exceeding $250 billion. By introducing the shekel to the blockchain, it joins other prominent currencies like the euro, yen, and Singapore dollar, which are gaining traction in blockchain-based financial systems.
