KuCoin EU Strengthens AML Capabilities to Address Austrian Regulatory Concerns

In a move to address regulatory concerns, KuCoin EU, the European subsidiary of the global cryptocurrency exchange, has augmented its anti-money laundering and compliance capabilities. This development comes after the Austrian Financial Market Authority (FMA) ordered the exchange to halt its European operations due to a shortage of AML and compliance staff. To rectify this, KuCoin EU has appointed Carmen Kleinhans as its Anti-Money Laundering Officer, alongside expanding its AML function. Additionally, the company has hired seasoned compliance experts Stephan Klinger and Bernd Träxler as Deputy Anti-Money Laundering Officers. According to KuCoin EU Managing Director Sabina Liu, the exchange has maintained open and transparent communication with the FMA since the regulatory action in February. As a result, KuCoin EU has been reinforcing its compliance team with multiple appointments, significantly expanding its capabilities. The exchange has faced recent challenges, including being barred from the U.S. by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission and facing regulatory issues in Dubai. However, Liu was unable to provide a specific timeline for when the FMA would permit KuCoin EU to resume its European operations, indicating that discussions with the regulator are ongoing.
